Mare Barrow is a Red in a world where the Silvers have all the power - and powers. When Mare unexpectedly reveals she has powers, too, the Silvers will do anything to keep it quiet, including betrothing her to the Silver prince under a false identity. They can't afford to have it known that there may be Reds who might be more powerful than they are. Mare has to choose whether to go along with the deception and betray her people or be killed. Who can she trust; what will she do?
Why I Picked it Up: It is the Abe selection for the YLP book discussion group at the Library.
Why I Finished It: At the beginning it seemed very much like a mash-up of The Hunger Games meets The Selection. That's not a bad thing, but it's been done already. BUT as I got into it, there were some surprising twists and turns to the plot. The "who can she trust" part is a little predictable, but on the whole it was a good story, ending at a good point for the series to take off.
I’d Give This Book to: Anyone who enjoyed The Hunger Games series and/or The Selection series.
