Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Reviewed By: A.T.
So I don't want to give too much away, since this is book 2 in the Lunar Chronicles (see the review for book 1, Cinder, from November 15 of last year). However, since this book focuses on Scarlet Benoit and how her life intertwines with Cinder's I can at least talk about a few things. Just like the first book was a modern day retelling of Cinderella, the second book is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. Scarlet is an 18 year old girl living on a farm in a small town in central France. She grew up under the care of her grandmother, who has been missing for the last three weeks, and she is desperate to find her. It's not until she meets Wolf, a stranger in her small town and a street fighter, that clues start dropping into place and the real action starts happening. All the while we keep popping back into Cinder's story until the two eventually meet up. Will Scarlet find her grandmother? Is Wolf someone she can trust (my what big teeth you have!)? Will they all be able to evade Queen Levana and help prevent the Lunars from invading Earth?
Why I Picked it Up: This is book 2 in a series, and once I start something I have to finish it. However, I did wait until book 3 came out this year before I picked up book 2, because I hate waiting a year to find out how something ends!
Why I Finished It: Loved it! At first I didn't think I would like that it was a different character, but once I figured out how their stories would intertwine, I kept wanting to skip the Cinder parts and go right back to Scarlet!
I’d Give this Book To: Anyone who loves fantasy, sci-fi, and fairy tales. I love that these stories involve space, aliens, mind control, and good old fashioned teenage angst.

**Librarian Side Note** Fairytales aren't usually my thing, but I was pleasantly surprised by these two books. Now I can't wait to read the third book, and luckily it is already published so I don't have to wait!  However, I have recently been informed that this book is part of a Quartet (4 in the series!) so I might have to wait just a little bit to find out  the ending, but so far it has been well worth the wait!!!!
