Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Reviewed By: A.T.
Meet Cinderella...with a twist! Sixteen year old Cinder is a cyborg living with an evil stepmother, one evil step sister, and one pretty nice step sister. As a cyborg, this means she is part human, part machine. While you and I might think that is cool, (because, hey, the mechanical parts meant she didn't have to die, right?) cyborgs are looked on as inferior.  However, it's not all bad. Cinder's machine interface has actually made her quite handy with machines, and she has built up a reputation as the best mechanic in New Beijing. So good, that even Prince Kai has asked her to work on his personal droid! However, despite the good luck of her chance meeting with Prince Kai, bad luck seems to follow Cinder wherever she goes. First she was orphaned, then adopted, only to have her adopted father (the only one who really wanted her)die and leave her with her awful stepmother Adri and stepsister Pearl. However, she does have one human friend, her other stepsister Peony, but bad luck finds her again when Peony is infected with Letumosis, the devastating plague that has been wreaking havoc on the planet for the last decade. Cinder's step-mom considers that the last straw, and signs Cinder up to become a test subject to help find a cure for the plague. But as Cinder discovers, there is more to her past than just being a cyborg, and possibly more to her future with Prince Kai. Will she be able to help discover a cure in time to save her sister Peony??
Why I Picked it Up: I'm a big fan of Cinderella, and I was curious about the cyborg twist! Plus, it's on the 2014 Abe Nominee list, so it's a must read for me this year.
Why I Finished It: I thought I knew how it was going to end, but I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be the first book in a series! I can't wait to read the next book...
I’d Give this Book To: I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fairy tales, especially ones that are retold to be more modern.

**Librarian Side Note** Yet another fantastic Abe Nominee book! And yet another series, this time it's called the Lunar Chronicles!! The next book in the Lunar Chronicles, Scarlet, is out and in our Library, and the third book, Cress, will be released in February of 2014, and you can bet we will be getting that too!
