The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams

Reviewed By: A.T.
Kyra is the main character in this novel about defiance, making your own way, and choosing what is right for yourself. From the start, we learn that Kyra loves her family. She loves her father, her three moms, and her 19 brothers and sisters. She never tends to question too much, but growing up in an isolated community as made her yearn for more. Occasionally she will sneak out of the compound to make trips to the Ironton County Mobile Library on Wheels (aka a bookmobile!) to read forbidden books like Harry Potter. Sometimes she will talk to her baby sister about how she would get rid of the Prophet, the leader of their community, if she ever got a chance. And sometimes she sneaks away to be with Joshua, a boy her age who feels the same way about her that she does about him. Kyra has high hopes for her future if only the Prophet wouldn't get in the way. When Kyra is told that she will be married to her sixty year old uncle who already has six wives, everything goes wrong. The Prophet has spoken, and in her small close-knit community, his word is final. What will Kyra and Joshua do? Will her father let her be married to her uncle? Will Kyra be able to free herself from this fate? Read the book to find out!
Why I Picked it Up: I picked up this book because it was the newest offering from the author. I had read a few reviews about it, found it interesting, and then lo and behold, the book turned up on the Abe Lincoln Award nominee list!
Why I Finished It: I finished this book because I had to know what happened to Kyra and Joshua. I also had to find out what happened to the bookmobile driver. It was too interesting to put down, and I'm so glad I picked it up in the first place!
I’d Give this Book To: I would give this to any high school student, boy or girl, who likes reading about strong characters who stand up for themselves, even if it means they might loose everything and everyone they know and love.
