Speak By Laurie Halse Anderson

Reviewed By: M.S.
Today is the first day of high school for Melinda Sordino and she’s not looking forward to it. She knows she won’t fit into any of the cliques at her school and she’ll end up being alone since she made a mistake at an end-of-summer party: she called the cops. Now everyone is against her, and even her ex-best friend mouthed the words “I hate you” on the first day back to school. But something else happened at that party that caused Melinda to lose her ability to speak. She feels there is no point in sharing what’s causing her pain since she thinks no one will care. What tragic event happened to her at the party? Will she ever be able to speak again? Read this amazing book to find out.

Why I Picked it Up: I picked up this book at my teacher’s suggestion. She loved the suspense and thought it was a great read.

Why I Finished It: I finished it because I wanted to know what happened to her, why she’s not speaking, and if she would recover by the end of the book.

I’d Give this Book To: Mostly girls since they could relate to it more than boys, but boys could surely read this book.
